自分がその時々に夢中になって手に入れた品々のおかげで、しばしの間、自分が幸せな気持ちになったのは事実である。何十年もの間、一貫して追い続けたのは、「象」の置物や作品である。象の置物や絵などのコレクターは世に沢山いるようで、国内外にお土産としてもあふれているので、数ではすぐに集まる。正確な数はこれから数えないとわからないが、できるだけ一対で買うようにしているので、それを１つとカウントして、200頭は超えているとはずだ。簡単に数えられないのは買ったら、山口県光市室積の峨眉山普賢寺というお寺に持って伺うか、送っていたからである。
For decades, I have consistently pursued "elephant" figurines and works. It seems that there are many collectors of such art works in the world, and as such there are overflowing numbers of souvenirs both domestically and internationally, which helped me to amass my collection quickly. I don't know the exact number until I count them, but I try to buy in pairs as much as possible, so if I count each pair as one, there should be more than 200. The reason why I can't easily count those is because when I bought them, I sent them to a temple called, Gabisan Fugen Temple in Murozumi, Hikari City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, or personally delivered them.
母の実家がある山口県室積は小学校に入る前から毎年夏休み、一緒に住んでいた叔母（母の妹）に連れられて過ごしたところだ。そこでは毎朝、祖母が母の実家から普賢寺様まで20分ばかり歩いて、ご先祖のお墓参りをするのが日課だった。寝坊をしなければ私も付いて歩き、普賢寺に出入りするようになった。普賢寺は普賢菩薩をご本尊としており、普賢菩薩は象の上に座っておられるので、このお寺は象さんが大好きで大切にしておられるのだとわかった。実際にご住職ご夫妻は、象さんの置物や絵をそれは大切にして、ご縁のある象さんが集まるのを大変楽しみとされていた。象の絵のなかに、中国の画家が伝聞でしか知らない象を描いて、鼻が極端に長く、くるくると巻いて天まで届きそうだった。「見たことのない象を想像して書いたのですね。中国の象の絵に時々あります」、とご住職が説明してくださった。ご住職のやさしく楽しそうな笑顔が忘れられない。
My mother's family home is in Murozumi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, where my aunt, (my mother's younger sister) who lived with us, took me and my brothers during summer vacation before I entered elementary school. Every morning while I was there, my grandmother would walk about 20 minutes from the house to Fugen Temple to visit the graves of her ancestors. If I didn't oversleep, I would accompany her, going in and out of Fugen Temple. Fugen Temple has Fugen Bosatsu (Bodhisattva) as its principal image, and Fugen Bosatsu sits on top of an elephant. In fact, the chief priest and his wife cherished the figurines and paintings of the elephants, and always looked forward to gathering more. In a painting of an elephant, a Chinese painter drew an elephant that he knew only by hearsay. “The elephant's trunk was extremely long, and it seemed like it would reach the heavens when it was rolled up. He created it, imagining an elephant he had never seen before,” explained the chief priest. ずっと後に私が社会人になり、両親の家で、週に3日か４日の自分が仕事を選べた時期は、普賢寺のご住職ご夫妻やご家族に喜ばれるということが強い動機となって、自分自身がお寺に持っていく象のコレクションに没頭を超えて、ほぼ熱狂してしまった時期もあった。買い物をするときには日常でも非日常でも象がいると、どうしようか？と立ち止まる。それがいつも見かける、いわば陳腐な象の置物であれば、すでに買った象だとほっとして過ぎ去ることができる。 Much later in my business career, when I could choose to work three or four days a week, the desire to please the chief priest and his wife of Fugen Temple, and their family became a strong motivation. I went beyond immersing myself in the collection of elephants I brought to the temple, and became almost obsessed. There were times when I was stuck. What should I do if I encounter an artwork of an elephant in my daily life or during private travels. If it's an elephant figurine I see all the time, I can pass by with relief, knowing that I've already got it.
国内の買い物では、北九州市のホテルのショーウインドーを飾っていた珍しい彩色の1頭の置物が気に入ってどうしても欲しくなった。持ち主を調べて私がペアで欲しいというと、その方が広島のショーウインドーにもう1頭飾っていると応じてくださって、2頭揃って譲っていただくということもあった。売り物でもない象を交渉するなんて自分の頭がどうかしていたと思う一方で、今、振り返ると、それだけの熱い想いと実行力があった若かった自分自身を懐かしむ。その一対の象は、牙を中途で切ってあり、使役に使う象をデザインしたようだ。その時に知った持ち主だった方は、当時も今も著名な貴金属やアクセサリー店のオーナーで、インドネシアで買ったそうだ。その一対の象は、現在、普賢寺様が、上がり框に置いてくださっていた。
As for shopping in Japan, I fell in love with a rare colored figurine that was displayed in the front window of a hotel in Kitakyushu, and I really wanted it.
After finding the owner, I asked for a pair, and he said that he had another one displayed in Hiroshima and sold me both. While I think I was crazy, negotiating for an elephant that wasn't even for sale, looking back now, I miss my young self for having that kind of passion and dedication. The pair of elephants had their tusks cut in the middle and seemed to have been designed to be used as servants. The owner, who was and still is the owner of a well-known jewelry and accessories store, apparently bought them in Indonesia. The pair of elephants is now placed on the entrance (agarigamachi) of the Fugen Temple.
もう一つ入手に苦労した象の置物は、普賢寺の正面玄関の入り口に座る、ラオスから連れてきた体長1メートル半は悠にある2頭の木製の象で、普賢寺様が用意してくださった台座の上で、日々人を迎えている。
1975年にラオスが王制から社会主義に移行するまで、この国はランサン王国、”百万頭の象の国”と言われた。ラオスの迎賓館だったランサンホテルのロビーでは、２頭のひざまづいた木製の象が客人を迎えて来た。私は1974年の１２月に約２週間、ベトナム戦争の最中、ベトナムの友軍として戦闘中だったラオスのビエンチャンに滞在したことがある。初めてテレビのレポーターになって、ランサンホテルに宿泊した。毎日眺めていたランサンホテルのこの2頭の象の静かで優雅な姿に魅せられた。数年後、5月の連休にラオスの民芸や木工に詳しいラオス人の知りあいを訪ね、ランサンホテルの象をモデルにして2頭の象を制作してもらう約束をした。山口県の普賢寺に置いていただくためだった。1年近く経った頃、航空便でラオスから2頭の象が届いたと普賢寺様から連絡があった。私が実際の作品と対面できたのは、さらに1年後だった。ランサンホテルのオリジナルをモデルにしながらも、製作者のデザインの独創性を加味していた。ランサンホテルと同じひざまづいた象の姿であるが、普賢寺の象の方が現代的で躍動感があるように感じられる。ランサンホテルの象をそのまま模倣したということにならなかったのは、結果的にはよかった。なにより私が感激したのは、普賢寺様が持ち込まれてた２頭の大きな象のために、それぞれ台座を注文してつくってくださったことだ。お寺様に散財させてしまって申し訳ないと恐縮した。
ラオスのビエンチャンにある、王制時代に制作され以降現在までランサンホテルのロビー飾られている一対の象をモデルに制作された象。峨眉山普賢寺（山口県光市室積）に置かれている。ラオスはかつて百万の象の国と呼ばれていた。 The pair of elephants of Gabisan Fugenji in Murozumi Hikari city Yamaguchi pref. , which is modeled from the pair of elephants in the Lang Xang Hotels, Laos. Another hard-to-find elephant figurine is two wooden kneeling elephants, about one and a half meters long, brought from Laos. They welcome people every day at the main entrance of Fugen Temple, on a pedestal prepared by Fugen Temple. Before Laos' transition to socialism in 1975, it was referred to as the Lang Xang Kingdom - the Land of a Million Elephants. In the lobby of the Lan Xang Hotel, which was also the official guest house of Laos, the two kneeling elephants would gently greet guests. In December 1974, during the Vietnam War, I stayed for two weeks in Vientiane, Laos, which at the time was also undergoing a war for solidarity as an ally of Vietnam.
My first experience as a TV reporter, during which I stayed at the Lan Xang Hotel. Since then, I was fascinated by the quiet and elegant appearance of the elephants at the hotel, which I saw every day. Using it as a sample, I had them made, but the completed elephants were not simply imitations of the Lan Xang Hotel's. The designer's originality was added to them. As a result, the figure of the kneeling elephants looks similar to those of the Lan Xang Hotel, but the elephants of Fugen Temple is more modern and dynamic, so it could not be said that the elephants of the Lan Xang Hotel were simply copied.
What impressed me the most was that Fugen Temple ordered pedestals for each of the two large elephants brought in by the temple. I felt sorry to have caused the temple to spend so much money.
象にまつわるコレクションでは体力も気力も使い果たしたが、普賢寺様でそれらの象さんに再会したときは、一つひとつの象がどこからどのように普賢寺に辿り着いたか、記憶が蘇えったのは嬉しかった。
「神仏は尊し」であり、普賢菩薩様には深い敬意をはらいながらも、そうかと言って特別な信仰心からではなく、また普賢寺様から頼まれたこともなかった。ご住職ご夫妻とそのご家族が喜ばれるからという一心で始めた、半世紀に及ぶ象さんとの出会いの数々を思い起こし、まだ家にいる象さんたちも、できるだけ早く普賢寺に連れていかないといけないと気が急くのだった。 （了）
The elephant-related collections exhausted my strength and energy, but when I met them again at Fugenji-sama, I was happy to be able to recall my memories of where and how each elephant had arrived at Fugenji. I have always believed that "God and Buddha are high minded," and while I highly respect Fugen Bosatsu, it was not because of any special religious beliefs, nor had I been asked to do so by Fugenji Temple. Recalling the many encounters with elephants over the past half century, which began with the sole purpose of delighting the chief priest, his wife, and their families, I feel that I am in a hurry to bring the elephants who are still at home to Fugen Temple as soon as possible.
